North Carolina Public Radio-WUNC, the public radio station licensed to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, is hiring a Program Director. The Program Director reports to the General Manager and is responsible for directing many aspects of WUNC’s programming, primarily news, WUNC Music and hosts.

WUNC strives to create and make accessible diverse programming that reflects the communities the station serves. The Program Director plays a key role in this mission by working with the General Manager in designing and implementing WUNC’s programming policies to conform with goals outlined in the station’s strategic plan. These goals include engaging more North Carolinians of diverse backgrounds and perspectives with new content and demonstrating leadership and creativity in journalism that positions WUNC as a primary source for news.

The Program Director will help ensure our news, broadcast and digital content reflects these values through a variety of responsibilities and dedicated attention to diverse perspectives, narratives and voices. The program director will recruit, hire and supervise the station’s on-air news and programming staff. Through assistant managers, the program director will provide guidance to reporters/anchors, program hosts and broadcast producers. The program director will oversee the creation and direction of original news and information programming that expands WUNC’s public service to listeners throughout North Carolina and the country. This position will oversee the selection and scheduling of locally produced and nationally acquired programming in consultation with appropriate personnel.

The program director will also oversee WUNC Music, a music discovery experience, in conjunction with the Music Director, which is currently HD2, streaming and on the WUNC music app.

The program director will work cooperatively with the development director to assure that fundraising goals are met. The program director will serve as a member of WUNC’s senior staff, participate in strategic planning for the station and attend all meetings of the WUNC Public Radio LLC Board of Directors. This position will prepare programming department budgets in consultation with the Finance Director, and assist in responding to questions regarding libel, fair use, community standards, and EEO. The program director will supervise, conduct and interpret research about the station’s audience service and use this research to enhance WUNC’s programming. The program director will also oversee certain online content and other new media endeavors, to include smart-phone apps, streaming and HD radio.

Educational Requirements A bachelor’s degree in journalism or a related field, with a master’s degree preferred

Qualifications and Experience This position requires demonstrated ability in management, and exceptional broadcast journalism and production skills, including experience with news reporting and feature production, and live talk/interview programs. The program director will have a minimum of five years of experience in news and information programming, and experience supervising a news-gathering or broadcast production staff. Professional broadcast journalism experience at a full-time news and information station or news network is highly preferred.

The Program Director will have strong research and communications skills and understand the importance of disseminating research findings to a broad and diverse listening audience.

Leading candidates will have:

Ten years of experience as a journalist or broadcast producer

(Will consider an equivalent combination of education and experience)

Management and supervisory experience, with increasing responsibility in each successive position

Experience with supervising public radio programming

Considerable knowledge of radio broadcasting equipment, including digital editing, broadcast operating boards, phone screening systems and portable recording devices.

Knowledge of music discovery and the Triple-A format

Exceptional written and oral communication skills

Familiarity with North Carolina, national and international issues is preferred

Demonstrated ability to plan and meet deadlines, working with materials from a variety of sources and collaborators

Experience with planning and executing on-air pledge drives

Ability to interact effectively with colleagues

Audience research and interpretation skills
