WRAL News is looking for a thoughtful and thorough education reporter to lead and own local and statewide education coverage. This individual should be prepared to track meeting agendas, establish contacts, develop sources and pitch enterprise stories related to the education beat. If you want to be part of a driven and successful team with the resources, technology and experience to help you grow, this position could be a great fit.

The successful education reporter will regularly write and edit stories for the web and television on both daily school news and longer-term investigative and enterprise projects. Experience shooting video and using live technology is preferred but not necessarily required.

The following characteristics and qualifications are essential: unquenchable curiosity, refined interviewing skills, superb storytelling abilities and solid research skills.

The reporter must ...

• be able to write and edit for both the web and television.

• be a manager of time and facts, serving as first editor and fact-checker, with the ability to deliver drafts close to publication and broadcast standards.

• understand the needs and habits of news consumers across multiple platforms and possess the ability to explain complex topics using multimedia – including but not limited to text, photos, video, graphics, and interactive presentation elements.

• excel in both written and verbal communication and be familiar with AP style

Must have a valid driver’s license with clean driving record. Three to five years previous experience in news and a four-year college degree required.
