Position Digital Producer
Description The ideal candidate is a self-starter who has a strong sense of what information our audiences both need and want and knows how to leverage a variety of platforms to create engaging content. Creativity with story headlines, mobile push alerts, videos, photos/graphics, and social media is key, plus a strong demonstrated knowledge of SEO.

The successful candidate will be an excellent storyteller and multi-tasker who can edit and create content facing intense competition under constant deadline pressure. The candidate must have the ability to remain calm but react aggressively and decisively, during breaking news situations with or without a manager present.

Above all, the ideal candidate will follow best practices, be a team player, and be motivated to grow the WXII 12 digital and social platforms and its KPIs, while emerging as a digital rock star and newsroom leader. If you want to learn and grow your career, this position could be an ideal fit.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Write/edit and publish breaking news, daily news, sports, weather, and feature stories for the station’s website, mobile app, and social media platforms

Write sharp, compelling headlines and carefully crafted push alerts with accuracy

Create digital content with a focus on strong SEO daily, while also following best practices

Have a passion for social media engagement, site traffic analytics, and taking ownership in helping meet the station’s monthly digital KPI goals

Consistently contribute ideas to help grow our station’s digital and social platforms including YouTube

Monitor social media and Google trends daily to create content for the station’s website

Execute digital content plan on severe weather, breaking news and station events

Develop and work with the Digital Media Manager on special digital and social content projects

Select and identify how to best tell stories utilizing different platforms and types of multimedia

Incorporate user-generated content to complement digital news coverage

Regularly create social content, including graphics and videos, and post to the station’s Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram platforms

Manage live streams of newscasts and breaking news on the website and on social media

Curate content on the WXII12.com homepage and app regularly throughout shifts

Be involved in daily editorial meetings and aware of daily news coverage

Work with reporters and assignment editors to ensure breaking news content is posted quickly and accurately

Work with TV news producers and managers to ensure cross-promotion of content across all platforms

Consistently monitor emails, ENPS messages to post breaking news and update stories throughout each shift

Help answer phone calls, and make calls to agencies concerning breaking news and severe weather

Identify and gather information on potential news stories seen on social media and other news websites.

Opportunities to produce stories, and social content in the field

Attend required digital and social training and advanced learning opportunities

Respond positively to feedback and direction from all newsroom and station managers

Maintain a positive work environment through active team participation and cooperation with coworkers in all departments and corporate teams

In-person attendance is required at TV station

Other duties as required

QUALIFICATIONS

Journalism and social media background preferred

Related experience and/or training considered as well as a combination of education and experience

Previous digital editing experience required

Experience as a writer or editor for a newspaper or TV news website

Publishing experience within a content management system

Basic knowledge and experience with Adobe Premiere, Photoshop a plus

Familiarity with local newsgathering workflow and terminology

1-3 years of professional newsroom experience and/or web-publishing environment.

Recent college graduates with extensive journalistic internships and campus media involvement may be considered

Strong news and editorial judgment, and ability to make decisions under pressure while changing direction when news breaks

Excellent AP writing and video editing skills

Ability to work under pressure in a time-sensitive environment with a strong will to win in breaking news, severe weather situations

Immaculate attention to detail, as well as a sense of balance, diversity, and tone of the stories on our various platforms

Know what drives digital audiences to click on stories and watch videos on desktop and mobile

Understanding of viral content and ability to produce content with viral potential and identify content before it goes viral

Ability to repurpose and recreate content in a way that is fresh, creative, and engaging to audiences

Understanding of SEO best practices, headline and push alert writing skills

Strong understanding of social media best practices

Must be able to work all shifts – early mornings, dayside, nights, holidays and some weekends included and also on short notice to cover a 24-hour news cycle

Flexibility to work extended hours or weekends for severe weather and breaking news

Ability to work well in a multi-tasking environment with frequent interruptions, while paying close attention to details.

4-year college degree in Journalism, Communication, Digital Media or related field
