Position News Director
Description WECT is looking for a News Director. This individual will lead a group of dedicated journalists committed to inform and serve the communities in the Wilmington, NC television market. WECT is looking for a hands-on teacher and mentor to continue the growth of our station on a variety of platforms. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Managing WECT’s news operations, creating and adhering to budgets, establishing goals and directing a newsroom of 40+ individuals that produces 44 hours of news each week for WECT and sister station WSFX.

• Demonstrating a solid ability to lead and deal with departmental and personnel issues that arise in a timely manner.

• Recruit top notch talent. This is a must. Turnover at the MMJ and Producer level is consistent with our personnel continually moving on to larger markets.

• Effectively negotiate contracts

• Communicate effectively with marketing and sales managers to grow ratings, and develop solid revenue making news franchises.

• Build on current solid culture that is in place to take WECT News to the next level on both broadcast and digital platforms

• A hands-on leader within the day-to-day operations of the newsroom, and able to work well with resources available. Must be able to fill in for EP and Assignment Editor positions if needed.

• ND will report to WECT General Manager, but WECT provides WSFX, the Fox affiliate in the market, with news and the ND will need to be able to work effectively with WSFX GM as well.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications or related field and a minimum of 5 years news leadership experience

• Must have a working knowledge of journalistic ethics, libel, and privacy laws

• Proven ability to develop a content strategy and drive accountability

• Strong organizational skills, ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines

• Solid understanding of digital content strategies and current digital platforms

• Strong leadership skills are required
